Open Diplomacy: Casa Sol de Mayo
New Embassy for Uruguay in the historic city of Rome
New Embassy for Uruguay in the historic city of Rome
This project envisions a new multifunctional Embassy for Uruguay in the heart of Rome, situated on the eastern edge of Campo de’ Fiori - a lively and historic square steeped in cultural significance. More than a diplomatic outpost, the proposal seeks to create a civic landmark that embodies Uruguay’s national identity while engaging with the urban and social fabric of the city. The design aims to complete the fragmented eastern elevation of the square, restoring the continuity of the urban block through a sensitive yet contemporary intervention.
Blending traditional Roman materials with sustainable building practices, the architecture incorporates glulam timber, lime plaster, hempcrete, rammed earth, and recycled terrazzo to establish both material harmony and environmental responsibility. The program merges public and diplomatic functions: a ground-floor café and cultural centre activate the square, while a central courtyard offers spatial clarity and connection between public areas and private embassy offices above.
Through its form, materiality, and spatial organisation, the project promotes values of transparency, cultural exchange, and sustainability. It positions the Uruguayan Embassy not only as a place of governance but as an open, welcoming interface between two nations—anchored in history, yet forward-looking in vision.
